Introducing the Combi Shooter Shooting Board

We’d like introduce a new shooting board to our lineup, called the Combi Shooter.

Combi Shooter Multi.jpg

The Combi Shooter, “Multi”.

The Combi Shooter gets its name because it combines two models of shooting board we currently offer into one. Starting with the Long Grain Shooter shooting board, we build it completely as a Long Grain Shooter including the Accessory Caul, then we add the Wide Board Shooter shooting board onto the very same platform, with all of its pivot fence capabilities.

The Combi Shooter in all cases is a complete Long Grain Shooter. The variables between each model are that the Wide Board Shooter aspect of the tool is available in three optional fence setting configurations; Basic which includes 45 and 90°, Basic Plus, which includes 45, 22.5, and 90°, and the Multi, which includes 45, 30, 22.5, 15 and 90° angles.

Like with all of our shooting boards, the Chute can be configured to work with a wide variety of different hand planes. For openers, We offer the Chute without Chute Adapters for use with most Stanley Bailey and Bedrock style hand planes, as well as wood hand planes. Please note that you can always upgrade our shooting boards to use Chute Adapter Kits later, if you purchase a board without them. All our shooting boards come standard with Chute Adapter mounting points and Chute Adapters are universally interchangeable on every shooting board model.

Combi Shooter Multi 62.jpg

The Combi Shooter “Multi 62”.

We also offer our shooting boards completed as “Enclosed Chute” Versions, which allow you to order them ready to use with the LN-51 Shoot Board Plane, LN-9 Iron Miter, Any brand of 62 LA Jack, The Veritas Shooting Plane, the Veritas LA Jack and the Veritas Shooting Sander. So whether you choose to have Chute Adapters or not, it’s always an option and every board can adapt to any plane at any time.

It is basically two shooting boards in one, with three different versions available for fence angle capacity, and seven different versions to accommodate the kind of hand plane(s) you wish to use on the Chute.

Like all of our shooting boards, the chute is milled to 0.001 inch straightness over the length, 0.001 inch coplanarity with the top, and the fence can be set to sub-minute angular accuracy, provided you have a protractor that provides that level of accuracy.

In terms of versatility, this shooting board pretty much has it all. Long Grain capacity to approximately 26 inches with the 90 degree fence, about 28 inches under the caul.

You can shoot rectilinear shapes with the 90 degree fence for high accuracy, or arbitrarily shaped objects by using the caul for fixturing. The size of the shooting platform will also allow you to shoot a very wide board to the 26 inch width range across the grain.

CS Multi VSP LGS Mode.jpg

The Combi Shooter “VSP” in “LGS Mode”.

Using the Wide Board Shooter fence position, you can shoot comfortably to 18 inch widths on rectilinear shapes, and usually somewhere between 15 to 18 inch widths using most of the standard angles available on the model you choose.

CS Multi 51 in Wide Board Mode.jpg

The Combi Shooter “51” in “Wide Board Mode”.

It is an extremely versatile board in that it does so much in just one platform. It takes up less space in the shop and is somewhat less expensive than having to buy multiple boards to get the job done. It is a great shooting board to augment one of our standard sized shooting boards offering most of the capabilities you’ll need for larger scale work.

Both of the shooting board styles used on the Combi Shooter are popular designs we have offered for years, and are already more than proven in hundreds of shops around the world. The only difference being now, is that both shooting board designs are available in a highly configurable, all-in one-package. It is an extremely capable shooting board for those who need versatility, work on large-scale projects that require both styles of shooting board, and need to save space in the workshop.

This shooting board is also a very comprehensive tool for those interested in or working with veneers, large casework, small parts, like small boxes where precision and safety is an issue, and impossible with powered equipment and Lutherie where wood not only requires precision shapes but the insurance of zero damage to wood fibers as well. It is a high precision tool.

Helpful Resources at Evenfall Studios

There are many resources for woodworking, metalworking and making in general available at Evenfall Studios, so we thought we would give you a quick tour of how to navigate and use them.

First off our blog. We use our blog a little differently than most websites. It is a resource of information about our products, articles on how to and tips as well as other information we hope you’ll enjoy. If you look up at the top index of our blog there are a number of different places you can navigate to on our website.

If you scroll to the top of the page you’ll see a row of index buttons. Most of these are available from every webpage on our site. Let’s start with the Blog Index.

One thing that is difficult to do on a lot of blogs is to go back and search for specific information that you may need access to again. Our Blog Index makes this simple by allowing you to search our entire blog archive by title, giving you quick access to all of the articles and resources that are published there. If you still can’t find what you are looking for, we also have Google Search available on every page of our website.

If you have questions about the many different types of Shooting Boards, Sharpening Stations, Sawing Jigs, and other accessories we offer, our blog is a great place to catch up on all these details.

Another area that we would like to call your attention to, is the Reference Section.

The Reference Section is an area where we catalog a number of useful informational tools that are available from our website, to help you plan and build your projects. We offer an easy to use Golden Ratio Calculator, you just supply a few dimensions. We have charts for Decimal to Fraction Equivalents, Abrasive Grits, Steel Gauges, Taps and Dies and more. We’re always looking for new things to add to this section, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to drop us an email and let us know!

We offer a Links Section, with links to many woodworking resources and tool makers that are on the web. It is not an exhaustive list, but it has some great resources, and perhaps some obscure things that might not be as easy to find.

There is also a link to our Woodworks Library. A library of over 200 old texts that pertain to woodworking and other craftwork, filled with important knowledge that may have been otherwise forgotten. Please feel free to take a look!

Finally, we also have a link to our Online Store. This is where you can purchase the various Products and Tools we offer, from Shooting Boards to Sharpening Stations and everything in between. Don’t forget to check out the things that we make that may help make life easier in your Kitchen & Home! If you see something you like, please feel free to place an order, and if you have any questions at all, please contact us!

Thank you for taking a look around Our Website, we hope you enjoy all of the resources available here!

What is a Woodworking Shooting Board?

First let’s sort out some ambiguity. This is a tool used in woodworking, and not to be confused with things that are used in the sport of hockey or firearm related sports.

Ultra Plus Shooter
The Ultra Plus Shooter.

A shooting board for woodworking is a tool which is sometimes referred to as a woodworking appliance, but for the most part it is simply a very important tool that makes a big difference in a woodworkers kit of tools.

The Woodworking Accuracy Solution

We’ve received some email from a few woodworkers and makers lately who wanted more woodworking accuracy, but they were not sure they could get to the accuracy they hoped for without CNC. Interestingly enough, most woodworking CNC setups will not work to 0.001 tolerances and handplanes with our shooting boards will do exactly that and do it day in and day out. They didn’t know, but now they do! It doesn’t cost anywhere near what CNC does. If you need precision and accuracy, Our Shooting Boards can help you achieve that with repeatability, all four seasons of the year.

When we think of a shooting board, we may think of a few scraps nailed together. We think of how wood moves and that the board will only be accurate for a little while. We think of it as a short time tool which helps us make our project.

Standard Shooter
Standard Shooter.

There is a better way to think of shooting boards. We’d like you to think of them as robust tools, built to last for years! That’s the way we make them. As a heirloom tool which is versatile and built to last. We build them to 0.001 tolerances to help you work to the level of control your layout and checking tools can provide you.

Tightening Up Your Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship in a word is just a word. We envision the ensemble of things we understand it to mean when we hear it, or think of it. We know what it is when we see it, on it’s face, we recognize it, but it is more than just a few simple words.

Busting a 2×4 in half with a sledge hammer is not an example of craftsmanship, it is however an example of demolition. The important thing to understand, while many people are capable of performing demolition, far fewer are capable of performing craftsmanship, even though they have the ability to recognize it, or even purchase such things for themselves.

But we all have the capacity to learn and do if we apply ourselves.

Cool Shooting Board Features and Capabilities

A Shooting Board is commonly known as a fixture that holds a board at a specific angle, such as 45 or 90 degrees, and allows most commonly the end grain to be cut accurately, but this is not the limit of what a shooting board and it’s potential capables are. Let me share with you what our shooting boards do differently, and better!

Our Shooting Boards Make A Difference

When it comes to shooting boards, Traditional designs come with limitations that have to be accepted. The downside to this is that these limitations become part of the mental lexicon that woodworkers carry in their mind when they consider the capabilities of the shooting board. I’d like to take a moment or two and address how our shooting boards help overcome many of these limitations.

Shooting Boards for the Veritas Miter Plane

Yep, We’ve got them!

Veritas – Lee Valley released their new Veritas™ Miter Plane earlier this year. Think of it as like the LN-9 Iron Miter, a low angle block plane with a 2 inch wide iron, Veritas styling and improved ergonomics. It is ambidextrous and cuts great from either the left or right hand. It even comes with a great ergonomic handle which improves controllability and helps it feel great to use in the hand. Another big plus is that the blades for this plane are available in both 01- and PM-V11 steels. I prefer either of theses steels to A2 because they sharpen to a sharper level, and PM-V11 has incredible durability and edge retention which is critical for planing end grain. We opt for the PM-V11 when we can.

Shooting Boards are More Versatile than you Remember

Published by under Shooting boards,Woodworks Store

Once upon a time Shooting Boards in woodworking were made for use at 90 degrees, and others for 45 degrees, and a few could do both. It was hard to keep them accurate and sometimes they took up a lot of space.

Then, Shooting Boards Evolved.

For seven years now, we have been offering our shooting boards to woodworkers worldwide.

We love precision. We care about Craftsmanship. From the work of our hands, we wanted more. From day one we have offered shooting boards made from Baltic Birch, the most stable wood available for woodworking. We still do. We feel they are the most accurate shooting boards available, capable of accuracy of up to 0.001 inch.

Over the years, all our shooting boards as well as the other tools we offer have been purpose made. Thousands of hours making meticulously and purposefully in a one man shop. After processing tons of personally selected Baltic Birch Plywood into thousands of tools and parts, we still offer our original shooting board, the “Deluxe Shooter” made to the same specifications we started out with. It has been joined by many other shooting boards that share it’s basic design, and offer woodworkers all the same accuracy and flexibility possible.

Shooting Board Versatility

We get many questions about shooting boards, there is a lot they can help you do. There are many woodworking parts and operations that benefit from using a shooting board to true our work, and we can apply it in more ways that traditionally imagined. The tool in and of itself is capable of providing machinist level accuracy to woodwork, and better suited to be thought as similar to a series of different saws or bench planes. It isn’t a one size fits all tool, and it depends on your application(s). The shooting board is much more than a one trick pony.
