The Wide Board Shooter™ - Master Miter
The Ultimate Molding Mitering Shooting Board
Whether you strike your own moldings with hollows and rounds planes,
mill them with machine tools, or buy them ready-made,
moldings present a problem for the single chute shooting board.
Unlike rectangular board stock, moldings have
contoured faces that cannot be used for reference orientation.
It is required that they be distinctly mitered in the orientation
that they will be displayed, usually with the back of the molding
used as the reference surface. As such, both right and left
sides of the miters are addressed individually for proper and accurate fitment.
Cornice Moldings or similar horizontally-oriented moldings that are
applied to casework, such as is used in many types of period furniture,
often require distinct left and right hand 45 degree
miters on them that allow the molding to wrap the case horizontally.
There are also opportunities to miter these moldings in the opposite way that
turns the molding inside instead of outside on the horizontal.
Other times we need moldings to turn vertically such as in the example
of a picture frames. Again, these moldings have to be made
accurate in the orientation they will be mounted in situ.
These miters require a shooting board that specifically addresses
these orientations, and maintains high-accuracy for those orientations.
Fitment for these moldings is critical. Angular accuracy and exact lengths
are important to getting the perfect gap-free fit and finish.
The Wide Board Shooter™ - Master Miter is a comprehensive, thoroughbred shooting board
specifically designed for 90 degree squaring, and mitering 45 degree angles
on square, rectangular or contoured stock that will be applied horizontally or vertically.
It offers high accuracy, high productivity and excellent ergonomics,
so all you have to do is focus on the task at hand.
Our Wide Board shooting boards are made from Baltic Birch,
the most rugged, stable and moisture resistant of all plywoods.
The overall size is 1-1/4 inches thick, and 22-1/8 x 14-3/4 inches, nominally.
Both chutes are 2-3/4 inches wide,
trued to within .001 straightness and
within .001 coplanarity to the top of the board.
The Dust Grooves keep small shavings
from accumulating and fouling the plane's accuracy.
Wide enough to accommodate any plane.
Finely smoothed and buffed with wax
for an accurate, friction-free plane chute surface.
The Wide Board Shooter™ - Master Miter is a combination use shooting board, that
includes the capabilities of both our Picture Frame Shooter
and our Casework Mitering Shooter.
It has four fences which comprehensively handle
many different shooting tasks, based on the orientation required for truing.
Fence 1 is the 90 degree fence, for squaring
any stock and moldings to 90 degrees.
Fences 2 and 3 are 45 degree left and right hand fences,
that are mounted and used simultaneously. They excel at shooting inside
corner miters, which are most commonly used on picture frames and casework.
Fence 4 is a double-ended left and right 45 degree angle fence.
Proper stock orientation is 135 degrees to the plane sole,
and requires that one angle position be used at a time.
This fence is calibrated in either position using two
45-45-90 drafting squares, and maintains calibration under shooting
forces very well. It excels at shooting outside corner miters.
Like all our shooting boards, all four fences calibrate
for high accuracy, any season of the year in under 30 seconds.
All four fences can be used with the molding laid with it's back
on the base or against the fence for reference.
The tall fence faces are removable to facilitate short work.
The working area of the shooting board is both trapezoidal
and rectangular shaped, as based on which of the four fences in use.
Nominally this area measures 9-1/4 inches wide by 13 - 18 inches long,
which is very roomy for moldings and dimensional stock.
All fence faces measure 1-23/32nds high for backing moldings to be trued.
All seven fence mounting points are counterbore-set steel inserts,
centered on the specific angle fence positions offered, and epoxied for rigidity and longevity.
The fences are special designs, each for use with specific situations and orientations.
Dedicated left and right 45's, for outside corner mitering on the horizontal.
Designed for thick or thin stock and moldings,
the tall faces are sized for a 2-inch blade and can be
easily disassembled from the bases, for short molding work.
Each working surface has been flattened to .001 on certified granite.
Precision Accuracy, Ergonomic, Productive, Efficient. Simple to use.
Great for use on moldings or rectangular board stock.
We finish with marine grade Teak Oil, an "in the wood" finish.
Lasting durability with proper care, it's a precision tool.
